During your first visit, we will likely take 3D scans of your head, neck, mouth, or face if you have not had these images taken already. Dr. Scherer, Dr. Graves, or Dr. Wilkinson will use these detailed images to evaluate your oral health, detect hidden concerns, and design your personalized treatment plan. 3D Scans in Dentistry 

3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology offers many benefits over traditional two-dimensional scans. These images are extremely detailed and allow your doctor to view your facial anatomy from virtually any angle. Viewing the dimensions and shape of your jaw will assist your surgeon in planning out the details of dental implant placement, for example, or determine if bone grafting is necessary to rebuild the jaw bone. 

A CBCT scan may also be used to: 

• Assess the airway and diagnose problems associated with obstructive sleep apnea 
• Detect lesions or growths
• Evaluate the sinus and nasal cavity 
• Provide measurements for oral appliances 
• Create detailed treatment plans for complex cases like facial trauma or jaw surgery

After we take a 3D scan, you can look at the images along with your doctor so that you can understand your diagnosis, ask questions, and be just as involved in the treatment planning process. 3D scans are safe for adults and children, although because children are more sensitive to radiation, we will only take these images if it is absolutely necessary to do so.
