Frenectomy

Improve Oral Function & Appearance

Inside the mouth, there are small bands of tissue called frenum. If these bands are too short or too thick, it can impair your ability to fully move your tongue or create a gap between the upper front teeth. A frenectomy is performed to release these bands and improve oral function and your smile’s appearance.

Dr. Graves and Dr. Wilkinson can perform the frenectomy procedure in the comfort of our offices in Lubbock and Amarillo, TX. Contact Lubbock Dental Specialists today to see how a frenectomy can improve your oral health and to receive a custom care plan.

What Is A Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a type of oral surgery procedure that involves releasing a frenum that is too short or thick. There are multiple frenums, or bands of tissues, within your mouth:

  • Under the tongue (lingual frenum)
  • Inside the upper lip and the lower lip (labial frenums)

Problems with these bands of tissues can decrease the range of motion of your tongue or cause a gap in your smile by pushing the two front teeth apart. If left untreated, these tissues may allow gum tissue to be pulled away, which can lead to root exposure and periodontal issues. Undergoing a frenectomy as soon as you can will contribute to your long-term oral health.

Frenectomy Procedure

A frenectomy is a quick and straightforward procedure that can be performed using a scalpel or laser. During your first visit, we will examine your oral health and use 3D scans to create your custom treatment plan. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, we are qualified to administer all types of anesthesia and sedation for your comfort. Prior to your procedure, we will help you select the right option for your needs.

Lingual Frenectomy

The lingual frenum connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Problems with this tissue restrict tongue movement, resulting in what people often refer to as being “tongue-tied.” Infants with this condition can have difficulty nursing and eventually speaking. During a lingual frenectomy, your surgeon will reduce the size of the frenum, which will allow the tongue to move freely.

Labial Frenectomy

The labial frenums are near the front teeth and connect the upper and lower lips to the gums. If this frenum is too large, it can cause a gap between the front teeth, creating misalignment and hygiene issues. A lower labial frenum can cause tension, exposing roots and causing gum problems around the affected teeth. A frenectomy will prevent these issues and can improve the cosmetics of your smile.

Types of Anesthesia

There are many anesthesia and sedation options available to you.
