Post and Core Buildup

Sometimes after a root canal procedure, post and core buildup is necessary to reconstruct missing portions of a tooth or to keep a dental crown in place. By placing rods into the canal where the root of a tooth used to be, we can retain the tooth’s core and create a healthy foundation to support the crown. If you need a root canal procedure, you may also require a post and/or core buildup procedure to ensure the end result is a healthy, structurally sound tooth.

Contact Lubbock Dental Specialists in Lubbock or Amarillo, TX, today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Scherer. We will outline all of your treatment options, help you select the right type of anesthesia for your procedure, and walk you through every step of your endodontic treatment.

When Is Post and Core Buildup Necessary?

Post and core buildup is not always necessary following a root canal procedure. It is often recommended, however, because improving the structure of the tooth will lead to a better outcome by providing the tooth with more structure.

Without enough structure, a tooth is unable to support a restoration, such as a crown or bridge. A crown that is placed on a broken tooth may damage adjacent teeth and make it difficult to bite and chew properly. With post and core buildup, the tooth regains its structure and can properly support a restoration.

The Post and Core Buildup Procedure

During your first visit, Dr. Scherer will take 3D scans of your teeth and plan out the details for your endodontic treatment. We will walk you through every step, including your options for anesthesia. Most post and core procedures are performed using local anesthesia, although there are many options available.

Sometimes, a tooth may only require a core buildup instead of the post and core. Post and core buildup takes about 30 minutes to complete, and we perform this procedure in the comfort of our office.

Post Buildup

After root canal therapy is performed, we will shape the root canal to receive the post using a dental file. We will insert the post, which is a small rod often made of metal, and cement or bond it in place. After the post is in place, we will fill the tooth with new core material made of resin and shape the tooth in preparation for your new crown.

Core Buildup

If a tooth has a healthy structure but part of it has broken or worn down, it may only require a core buildup. We will use resin materials to rebuild the missing portion of the tooth.

After Post and Core Buildup

After the tooth receives a core buildup, we will place a temporary crown to wear until your final crown is ready. You should visit your restorative dentist for the final crown as soon as possible and be careful to avoid hard or crunchy foods that could damage the temporary crown. Keep in mind that post and core buildup is performed on teeth that were previously weak. If a restoration is not placed or if special care is not taken to protect the temporary crown, the tooth could break. By receiving your restoration in a timely manner, you ensure better results and help preserve the longevity of your tooth.

Types of Anesthesia
